Check the little black connector for the pickup to see if it has corrosion inside.

Thanks guys for tips thoughts . We Checked valve springs with a tester used with rocker arms still on all read about 200 to 220 seat pressure . We changed coil out and magnetic pickup cleaned reluctor surface rust as normal looking set 008 gap . Other thing as you look and try to remember .As I was starting car last Sat air shifter tried to shift this was intermittent and hasnt acted up again .Some say as car was cranking it was triggering the shifter to shift .Thought abot a new Tach or disconnect it . Cleaned and moved some grounds . Same plugs we have been using .NGK 2 others use same fuel . Reset timing 34 . Shorten gap on plugs as a suggestion . hopefully get out Wed . Next if need to change msd box hope not . Start all over if need to . 200-235 min up to 600 lift cams, over 600 235-250 seat. 1.5 rockers, or 1.6 ? If your seeing at min spring pressures, they are week, , does free up the Rpms , but can be a issue, ??

I moved the magnetic pickup wire it was next to coil wire ,but its been like that forever though firewall . Put a ground wire from motor to body never can have enough grounds I guess . Wed looks to be a great weather day .

Grounding can be mischievous at times, Just when you think it looks like it should , maybe far from it , As well as low voltage issues, I do hope it sorted out

I had an issue a couple years ago. When I sold my race car as a roller. I took my gauges and tach and put them in my sons car. They were Stewart Warner and a better grade than we had in his car. I installed my 406 sbc in his car and I shifted it at 7000 previously. It wouldn't rev past about 5500 in his car. I chased my tail on this almost the whole season. Changing all the electronics, carb, fuel pump ect. I finally unplugged the tach, and it ran normal. Plug the tach back in and it sounded like I just put mufflers on the car. The tach was acting like a rev limiter, couldn't believe it. The tach was shorting out the msd 7 box. Only takes a second to unplug the tach and try it.

oh boy still got it 5 time to track . 1st pass 10.09 132mph 1.43 spun its butt off 152 jets some popping water box felt sounded good . 2nd pass 10.18 129mph 1.38 we had jetted up to 160 jets popped more and water box felt not clean . 3rd pass 10.01 131mph 1.40 we had jetted to a 148 jets felt and sounded like 1st pass . Changing out MSD box and looking at going down on jet more Sat . To me sounds like it pops at or above 6000 we go trough trap at 7000 .

If you get the electrical problem fixed you may not need to go down on jets as it will no fire more fuel.

What spark plug are you running? Is it the same plug as before the roller cam and freshen?
How much compression?
What are the old and new cam specs?

Sure sounds like fuel delivery, but not jets I know you've changed pumps, Could there be w restriction somewhere in line or regulator messed up ? I know ken Jones wants 7 1/2 # to each bowl Have any idea where your at there8

Don,
I had the same thing happen years ago. It turned out to be the relucter wheel hitting the pickup at high rpm's. The bushing in the distributor was shot. Just something to look at.

Chased the exact same problem a few years ago with the Dragster. Would get out about 900 feet and start hammering and banging. We replaced plugs, wires, springs, rebuilt the heads, took the motor apart and went through everything. Put it on a dyno and it screamed to 8000 RPM. Put it in the car same thing, borrowed the machine shop guys MSD tester and put it on the car and it worked great. Started wiggling connectors and low and behold had a bad connector at the ignition terminal on the MSD Box. Replaced that took it to the track and it was amazingly fixed. Only cost me $4000.00 to find a $0.30 connector bad.

Dennis We run a Barrel valve setup from C&S on idle 3 lbs open ,WOT not motor running 12 lbs running down track 9 lbs with valve closed . We are thinking of taking off barrel valve and putting in a regulator with no 8 lines to carb we have 10 from pump to log and get pressure up to regulator .
Mike you might have hit it .I Changed out MSD 6al and I found the main red power wire loose on its screw post that I could wiggle it might have been close to a turn .Didn't see any arcing on it but needed addressing been in 5 years .
Scott 12.7 on compression, same plugs new changed them and wires after 1st week of this popping ,went up about 50 thousand from solid cam .
Brian Clean reluctor reset gap with new pickup coil .
Kevin EGT gauge nope . I can borrow the magna fuel regulator just don't think I can get No 8 lines and fittings from regulator to carb without being in a mad rush .
Thanks guys

6th time to track was popping still after we changed msd box and shorten plug gap more . We changed from barrel valve setup to a magna fuel regulator cut new lines and increase pressure to This system setup . We had a hiccup that developed the weld broke on our welded advance in the dist and timing was 60 degrees 10.22 10.21 . Thanks to Steve Pearson for the drill to lock it in . We didn't know when it broke since Wed when we put it in Sunday . We put on a dominator ask gmp to make a pass it was heavy jetted .Left hard popped 2 times and ran hard 132 plus Mph 10.14 So now I'm Leaning to my carb to get checked flowed by C&S . Start over again .next week . Thanks for the help by those leaning over the car all day . Also thanks to all offering all the parts to chase this thing .
