how many of you guys run air filters on your race car and if so what kind and size I have a holley dominator on mine and a cowl hood thanks Charlie Attachments:

I usually take mine off at the track. just makes it a little less restrictive (I think)

We run a Dollar General strainer from the kitchen section. Keeps the big stuff out.

At a track like Gateway I feel that using a wire mesh is sufficient. We use a stainless fine mesh strainer from the discount store. Simply remove the handle and bolt it to the scoop tray. Its inexpensive and efficient. If you travel to other tracks that have gravel or sandy areas then an air filter is definitely the way to go. If the cowl hood is tall enough you can use a traditional "chrome dome" type air filter. Some things to look out for is using too small diameter or too short of a filter(getting the chrome lid too close to the top of the carb) as these can choke a high performance engine down. If height is a problem then try using a flat panel type filter in a tray over the carb. If room allows a short velocity stack will seal the tray to the carb rather than just having a hole in a flat tray. From what I have seen, using a properly sized filter for your application will not harm ET or MPH in any way. In some cases it will actually help because it straightens out the turbulent air around the carb itself. We have used K&N filters in the past with good luck but recently I bought a Spectra filter from Auto Zone and seems to be performing equally as well. Stop by and look at Dennis' 32 Bantam altered or my dragster at Gateway. Look in the scoops and you can see our stainers.
Recently a well know engine builder did some testing on the dyno with carbs. He lowered a flat piece of metal closer and closer to the top of the carb to see how close it had to be to choke the engine. I do not remember the measurements but it got extremely close before it made any difference. Basically they determined that the majority of air was going into the carb from the sides and not straight down as first thought. This was in a controlled environment NOT under a scoop at speed with turbulence. In other words these 2 foot tall hood scoops are not needed.

I can sell you a similar one for a lot less. on another note, I've heard that in dyno test the filter tops can actually hurt horsepower.

It has to do with the direction of the air flow. I'm no engineer by any means. If I can find any info, I'll post it.

Bought one of those pretty edelbrock chrome triangles with the foam insert. Car runs 1000% percent better now (with more room to improve I'm sure), but you guys got me thinking I might just remove the foam out of it before tomorrow night. Weather pending, i'm hoping to get a new set of time slips with a new carb tomorrow night.

The only problem i've heard of with the Edelbrock filter is if you have a backfire, the foam will burn and drip in the carb.

Very Nice! About 2 years ago I talked to a prominent comp racer and was told by adding a bell similar to what you have was good for 3 mph on the big end. It would be nice if you could do some A-B-A testing on that. Of course set up's vary and will react differently to any changes.
