When Brad Talbott heard about the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's first Lap of Champions fundraiser at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he was thrilled. He bought a ticket, took a lap, and learned how his ride helped kids with brain tumors.
Two weeks later, the cause hit close to home.
"My sister-in-law called to tell me their youngest son had a brain tumor," Talbott said. "He got great treatment, and still gets wonderful help because of the work and funding this organization provides."
Now Talbott, owner of the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort on the North Carolina/Tennessee line, is using his business to give back to the PBTF.
Deals Gap sits at the south end of the infamous Tail of the Dragon, named for its 318 turns in 11 miles of scenic U.S. 129. This stretch of road is nothing compared to the route Talbott’s nephew had to navigate with his brain tumor, however. That battle inspired Talbott to create the "Dragon Slayer Sweepstakes" to benefit the PBTF.
For just $5, ticket buyers get a chance to win:
Two three-day passes to the 2010 Moto GP race in Indianapolis;
A lap on your motorcycle on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the PBTF Lap of Champions on Aug. 28;
Dinner with Brad Talbott and the rest of the Deals Gap gang on Saturday night during the Moto GP;
A three-night stay for two in downtown Indianapolis; and
$500 cash
Each ticket buyer will also receive two entries for a 2009 Honda CBR600RR to be given away at the Lap of Champions. The pearl-white motorcycle features kids' artwork, some of which was created by Ride for Kids stars. (Because the Lap of Champions is open to only 300 motorcycles, the sweepstakes winner will be competing with no more than 299 participants for the giveaway bike.)
