I put my car in 2nd, flip the rev limiter on, bring the rpm up a little on the foot brake and let her eat.
My car has way to big of a tire for the engine. I could probably drive around the water and run without a burnout if I had to.
I read where some guys shift during the burnout and some say that's hard on parts.

I start in 1st after setting the line lock. Bring it up to about 5000 and shift into second. I am only in 1st for 1 second (estimate) and 2nd for 3 more, then let go of line lock and do a short rolling burnout. Then I pre stage, clear it out, stage and take the win light. Been doing the burnout thing this way for 14 years and never had any thing go wrong except one broke bellhousing and it was last year on a 72 model tranny. It was time for it to break.

I have been doing my burnouts in high gear since 1980. Coan, TCI, Abrussi, all have told me to do high gear burn outs, glide or turbo. My car weighs 3030 and runs 9.00 151.

Even when I did not have horse power I still did high gear burnouts. Just went slower

On my bike, I put it in 2nd gear, squeeze the front brake, bring the revs up to 5000 and drop the clutch, then twist it on up to about 9500 for 3 or 4 seconds rocking side to side a couple times, then ease off the brake and throttle and let it spin out about 10 feet till it grabs. I'm not as brutal with Marks bike. 1st gear, and 7500rpm I've never had a traction problem with either bike

In our dragster I start out in low gear and almost immediately shift into high. This is because I do not use a 3 step and have methanol injection and I find it easier to control the burnout rpm's this way.
When I drove Dan Boone's dragster in 2007 it had a 3 step to control rpms. We used our engine so it was still methanol injected. Since it had the 3 step I just put it in high and mashed the throttle.
Length of burnout is normally 3-5 seconds and I lift when I feel the tires traction pulling the engine down. With the 3-step it was just a count in my head.

Even at WOT on the chip, I usually get stopped before the starting line. If the waterbox is a sloppy mess or cars have tracked water towards the line, my front tires cross the line but not my back. The crew at Gateway have learned this and usually start my burnout the same time as the doorcars. They don't send me first like they do the dragsters.

I wait until the other car starts his burnout then i start mine in low and shift to high instantly, soon as i feel it start to hook i let loose of the line lock and let the staging games commence.

On my dirt modified I wait till the green flag drops then I light em up throwing mud clods all over the rookies behind me... ) ) Then I throw it down into turn one corner hard and slice mud up into their face shields as they try to pass me on the outside... ) )

High gear only for me. I drive all the way through the water, start the burnout with the line lock, release the line lock and power towards the line. (I hate it when the waterbox guy motions me to start when the starting line guy is mopping something in my lane. I just refuse to start my burnout till my lane is clear.)
With wet tires I don't see the need to be shifting on the burnout. In 3rd gear you are getting a higher "mph" at the same rpm, seems more effective to me.

Ok John, since Denny isn't responding I'm going to tell you how he would want it done. Start off in 1st gear and get the rpm's up until you hit the rev limiter. Then shift it into 2nd, 3rd then 4th and slowly come out of the water box once the entire area is engulfed in smoke. Don't lift off of the throttle until you either cross the starting line or the oil pressure light is on. Now you are ready to make a good clean pass. If you don't believe me just ask Dusty and he will verify that Denny will OK this technique. ;D
