The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Harley-Davidson is recalling certain model-year 2009-2012 touring and CVO touring motorcycles and trikes to change-out the rear brake light switch.
Vehicles affected were manufactured between June 6, 2008, and Sept. 16, 2011. It's estimated that the number of vehicles affected slightly exceed 250,000 in the United States and 300,000 worldwide, according to NHTSA. (For a list of the models involved in this recall, click here.)
Excessive heat from the exhaust system "may cause the switch to not activate the brake lamp, or activate the brake lamp when no brake is applied, and/or cause a brake fluid leak at the brake light switch, affecting rear brake performance. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash," NHTSA stated.
The Motor Co. is notifying owners. Dealers are asked to install a rear brake light switch kit free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around Oct. 31.
