You probably know I recently bought an '81 Honda cb900c. It was in decent shape for a 30 year old bike with 33,500 miles on it. On my first inspection I noticed it was very cold blooded and needed the choke on for several minutes before riding it. Even after a five minute test drive, it would pop or spit sometimes when you tried to rev it. It also had some top end noise, which I figured to be a loose cam chain.
After I got off work tonight, I went in the garage and pulled the fuel tank and carbs off the bike. While the carbs were off I adjusted both cam chains. There is an adjustable tensioner in front of the motor for the chain that runs from the crank up to the exhaust cam, and a tensioner on the back of the motor for the chain that wraps around both cams. Its almost impossible to get to that one with the carbs on. I doubt either had ever been adjusted before.
I dissasembled the carbs and gave them a good cleaning and installed a Dyno-Jet stage 1 jet kit. Now before you start razzing me for souping up my cruiser bike, let me say this, The Dyno-jet kit has all needles and jets needed for either a stage 1, or the much hotter stage 3 set up. The stage 3 kit needs individual filters on the carbs instead of the stock airbox, and yeilds much more power, but sacrifices fuel mileage and driveability. I have a set of filters and could have went with the stage 3, but I opted for the stage 1 and stock airbox with a new filter. Should run better and even get better mileage than stock.
After I got it all back together, I started it and let it warm up. The first thing I noticed was there wasnt any top end noise at all. The cam chain adjustments worked wonders. After it warmed up I got my vacume gauges and sycronized the carbs. Its like a new bike now, idles smooth and quiet, and revs very quickly when you blip the throttle. I dont work fridays, so tomorrow I'll go get an inspection and tags, then its supossed to rain on saturday! wtf!

I rode the new old Honda to work all week! Got a few sprinkles one day, but no rain. Thursday (my last day cause I'm off fridays, 4-10's) on my way home the bike ran out of gas. I switched it to reserve and it still wouldnt run! I opened the tank and it was dry. I called my nephew that works with me since he was only a couple miles down the rode, and he got some gas and brought it back. After pouring it in, it still wouldnt run. He locked it in 4 low and backed into a big ditch and we rolled my bike into the back of his truck. That night in my garage I discovered two problems, (1)- I need a new fuel filter, and (2)- I need a new Pet Cock....no wait, I mean petcock!!!! The petcock SHOULD have a small 1 or 2 inch tall tube inside that draws fuel when in the ON position, so when it runs out, you still have a couple inchs of gas to use in the RESERVE position. The one on my bike had been broken off, so even when it was in the on position it was drawing fuel off the bottom of the tank and when it ran out, it was OUT! There was some crud in the tank also, so when I ran it dry, it sucked all that crud into the filter and clogged it so it still wouldnt run even after pouring in more gas. Friday, I cleaned the tank, and carbs again, installed a new filter and it runs like a top! I'm gonna order a new petcock so I'll actually have some gas on reserve next time

I put a new fuel petcock on the cb900 shortly after my last post, but havent had to use the reserve yet. I like to fill it up around every 100 miles or so. Its been getting around 40mpg driving to work and back, and taking the kid for a ride nearly every evening. Our motorcycle laps are different than our old scooter laps. On the motorcycle, a lap is leaving town on highway 89 (two lane blacktop) and driving 22 miles to the east side of Linn, and then going a couple miles through Linn and getting on highway 100 (another two lane blacktop) and driving 21 miles back home. Its a nice 45 mile cruise and we make that lap after supper just as the sun is going down. I drive under 60mph because there is a lot of wildlife (deer, racoon, fox, coyote, opossum) that like to run across the road. Its like animal dodge ball!! Today we (Savannah and I) road to linn and back (45 miles), and then without even stopping at home we rode to Hermann, and back (42 miles) then after supper we rode back to Linn and took highway 50 to Jefferson City, crossed the river and got on highway 94 and rode back to Hermann then got on highway 100 and came home (112 miles) Thats a 199 mile day. The kid says her butt is a little sore ;D We are planning on riding down to around Hot Springs, Arkansas later this summer. We drove the van down there last fall to buy some speakers, and found some kick-ass hiking trails!
My bike had 33,500 miles on it when I got it a couple months ago, it now has 35,600
p.s. it has been leaking fork oil, so last weekend I drained the forks and refilled them with a mixture of Trans fluid and Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak. It has slowed the leak, but hasnt stopped it completly.

I got home from work today and the kid wanted to go to taco bell for supper so we jumped on the bike and went. Its 45 miles to the nearest taco bell in Jeff city. I put the bike back in the garage tonight with 38,218 on the clock! Thats a little more than 4700 miles since I got it in May

We went to Taco Bell on the bike again last night. On the way home it was dripping a little fuel out of the overflow tube on the #1 carb. The floats are made entirely of plastic and are non-adjustable, so I guess new floats will be on my winter to-do list. Other than the fuel drip, the old cb has been a true warrior. Its 30 years old and now has 40,117 miles on it. I think I'll customize it a little of the winter and ride the crap out of it next year.

How did you know thats what I wanted to do? ;D actually we have talked about a sidecar, that way Savannah could ride in it and the wife could ride on the bike with me......or better yet, keep Savannah on the bike with me and let Bonnie ride in the sidecar and I'd have like an ejector switch to unhook the sidecar while cruising down the road
