Anybody have a SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) on the horsepower and torque gains by adding a cold air intake setup and a Flowmaster Exhaust system (without catalytic converter) to a 1993 Silverado 4X4 with a 350? This might be a dumb question, but I never claimed to be a rocket scientist.
I've been told that this model was listed by Chevy to have 245hp, (not sure about the torque listed by Chevy) but I find that to be difficult to believe. The truck pulls too good and accelerates too good to be that low on power. I added a Hypertech Thermomaster Power chip to the truck a few days ago and the performance gain is VERY noticable. The chip has to be accompanied by a 1600 thermostat and 93 octane gas. It runs a lot cooler now which was my reason for doing the chip in the first place. My truck pulled my 31 foot camper like it owned it, but it ran a little warm when going up long grades with the air on so I tried this chip. Cooling problem solved pretty much and it does pull the camper a lot better than it already did (which like I said was pretty good before). But I can tell it needs to breath better. I will be adding the air intake and the Flowmaster exhaust this week. I was just wondering about the gains I might expect from these two bolt ons.

My swag would be maybe 5-10 with a cold air, another 5-10 with a free flowing exhaust. Nowhere near the manufactures claims, but just a little SOP noticablility (seat of pants).
Unproven opinion based on adding a cold air to my chevy, and from trolling chevy truck forums.

you should notice a difference in power plus better fuel milage if you do the CAI and exhaust

Unproven opinion based on adding a cold air to my chevy, and from trolling chevy truck forums. I have already noticed a SOP difference with just the Hypertech chip and the gas mileage is WAY better already. From guys I've talked to who have done the chip and the cold air along with the Flowmaster exhaust claim an average of 45-50 hp total using all 3 mods. I can tell you this, it took about 3 days of driving before the temp/mileage/sop sensation all came together with just the chip. I was told that the computer had to evaluate what changes were made from the chip and then make the changes to the tune up to get everything right. It's kinda like the chip throws a tune up at the engine and then the computer has to make other "adjustments" to bring it all together. I don't know if this is true or not, but it did take about 3 days before everything worked as advertised by Hypertech.

50 would be a huge improvement. Keep us posted on that. I wanted to throw a tune on my truck, but haven't been able to move that up on the priority list. Too many toys and projects going on right now , plus I just want my truck to get me to work, tow my stuff, and be reliable. It's already got plenty o' power, and "good enough" towing [although our boy scout trailer gives it a run for it's money]. Mine is the 07 NBS, so when it was new, the tuners, both devices and people, hadn't quite figured out how to tune the new computer or the 4 cylinder shutdown. From what i've read, the 07 has a free flowing airbox already, as well as the exhaust, so the mods from just a few years ago really don't apply to mine. Most gains on mine are found using a computer rather than a wrench until you start thinking about boring and stroking the 5.3 to a 5.7...which will never happen to this one while I own it.

The key word about the 45-50 hp gain is that they "claim" those numbers. I'll have to see it to really believe that.

Well I was going to put the FlowMaster exhaust on the truck this week, my cousin was giving one that fits my truck that he had still in the box laying in his garage. He had misplaced the muffler and was on a mission to find where he put it.
He got home from work on Tuesday (the 22nd) and was watching some TV with his mom and had a massive heart attack and died before the ambulance could get him to the hospital. He was 52 I'm 54, we grew up inseparable... Now the exhaust system doesn't seem to matter that much. His funeral is tomorrow at 2:00PM.
Sorry I missed the bracket race on Saturday guys, but some things just take priority over others.

Tom,
That is sad. Sorry...
How much better is your fuel mileage? Does it offset the cost of the premium fuel?

Tom, That is sad. Sorry... How much better is your fuel mileage? Does it offset the cost of the premium fuel? WAY more than offset the cost of premium. Plus I live about 5 miles from a BP station in Missouri and the price is always about 20 cents less than Illinois anyway. My mileage around town is up by about 5mpg and that's no BS. I'm pretty blown away by this chip. My HP is deffinately up noticed in the SOP and my low end torque is amazing. My truck will move a trailer that weighs nearly 9000 pounds at idle without touching the gas pedal. That was NOT the case before. I don't mean just roll a little bit. It will actually increase in speed to a point without touching the gas pedal at all. I still haven't pulled it down the highway, (that will come the week before NASCAR comes) but I can tell already that I'm on the right track. I still need an exhaust system though. It's time to replace it anyway it's the factory exhaust system from 1993 when the truck was built.
