The former owner of the Mid-West Choppers custom shop has been sentenced to of 3 1/2 years in prison on fraud charges and ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution to about two dozen customers who paid for products or services that were never delivered.
Chip Miyler, 41, former owner of the shop in Galesburg, Ill., was sentenced in federal court Friday.
Miyler admitted accepting large sums of money for custom motorcycles between 2003 and 2005, keeping the money and filing for bankruptcy shortly afterward, according to the Peoria Journal Star.
Miyler claimed he never meant to defraud anyone, but didn't pay attention to the finer details of business until it was too late. By then, the economy was heading into a tailspin.
Most troubling to U.S. District Judge Joe McDade was that Miyler took money from a person one day before he filed for bankruptcy. "You had to know," the judge said, "that your business was failing."
