We lost a great man last night. Matt had one of the biggest influences in my drag racing than anyone. He was like a Dad to me back in 78-85. He helped me with engines and sponsorship of my 69 Nova and Tim B Duster. And many more racers from back then. I had the pleasure to drive his old pro stock nova in the fall of 82. 9.20's if I remember correctly. His health hasn't been good the last couple of years. He will be missed by many

I remember his sponsorship of the old track a lot and I believe his nephew billy Matt Johnson racing in the 2000s at gateway

It is very sad. We all spent a lot of time around him and Dave Paxton back in the 70's. I am very happy he was able to see and appreciate the Parade of cars past his hospital window this past Sunday. A number of the older racing guys were there.
