The consecion is one of the biggest problems. Whe I was going to benton and Havana every weekend. I knew don't bring any food or drinks because I can't buy it at the gas station as cheap as they were selling it. Plus the Benton cheeseburgers can not be beat, that's why the line is always full. Gateway has NEVER made a cheeseburger worth eating let alone paying $6 for !

The landscape is different for bracket racing. As long as I have been racing I don't recall there ever being a notable amount of spectators at a bracket only race. I would say most people don't get how it works and lose interest quickly. A heads up race on the other hand is very easy to understand for the casual spectator. To them, that is what drag racing is supposed to be. If you want spectators there needs to be a race they understand and identify with so they don't lose interest quickly. Another thing to consider is how dirt track racing works. For instance, there are regular racers that the spectators become fans of and support them and the track for regular weekly entertainment. And they get to watch them race for more than 10 seconds at a time. I understand it's completely different but as a race fan there is more perceived value there. Of course the racers really take it in the shorts there, no payouts to speak of and your stuff gets really beat up every race.
At the drag races your regular ET racer can watch and see some interesting points like staging games and down track skill, etc. Average Joe isn't going to pick up on that and will get bored quickly. And trying to explain it to them doesn't help either.
If there were some fun to watch heads up stuff going on, that was promoted well, there would be butts in seats. All that stuff costs money. And I would say it probably doesn't pay for itself on a small scale.

Do the smaller tracks pay the people working at least minimum wage? Do they pay their taxes, workman's comp and the rest of the burden or do they have uncle joe running the grill and some people working for cash? Do they claim all the sales tax on every item or is it a cash business? Do they have a deal with Pepsi who can basically set the price you sell or are they going to Sam's and buying product by the case? My parents have a soda machine in front of their business. In order to have that machine, they have to buy the product sold through it off the company's truck when it comes around. The are not allowed to buy it at the local grocery store even though it would be a lot cheaper that way.

I think Havana did buy the stuff from SAMs and of course gebhart didn't pay state tax. Lol . I hear what your saying Dennis. I just know that even if benton added .08% to the $3 price of that bad azz cheeseburger everyone would still gladly pay uncle joe $3.24 for the same burger and joe gets tips from the tip jar so he doesn't care if Benton pays less than minimum wage or pays his social Security . The point is that if gateway cared enough they to could sell a REAL cheeseburger that pepole will eat and tell other people " don't bring your grill to gateway they have a killer homemade $3.50 cheeseburger "

All Jason was saying is that consession was an area for improvement for racers and spectators! Why is that so bad and why do you always turn an innocent discussion into we will all be sorry when the place closes? If that place closes again it isn't going to be because of something negative that one of us pion racers say on Crossbones! I think the point Jason was trying to make is that good food does make a difference at a race track for the spectators and racers. Remember how packed it was trying to get food at MAR? I bet everyone hear misses the MarBob breakfast sandwich on Sunday mornings. And yes most people remember the good burger that Benton serve. Heck I have never even been there and I want to try the world famous pound of icecream for $1.00 they serve at Norwalk! All he was saying is that good food being served can make a difference!

I really don't think most bracket racers at GMP buy much food drink or beer from the consession stand .I and many around us BBQ and make it full day event of fun and being harassed by our friends and helping each other . It's a convenience and a cost with it . Just like fuel bet many don't buy fuel at the track but the part time racer and Wed racers do .

Man, coming down hard on the Beaver for wanting a good burger! LOL. Maybe it all sounds like complaining, but I think people only post complaints because they care and don't want to see the track fail and close again. That's why it's frustrating to see no promotion of the weekly program other than Midnight madness and then claims of bracket racing is financially a big looser when there is so much opportunity.
When I was a kid, I loved coming to the track. I didn't know a thing about bracket racing and it didn't matter. I just liked seeing the cars go down the track and dreamed one day I'd have something worth taking to the track.

People watch golf and tennis for crying out loud. Bracket racing can't possibly be as boring as that crap.

Think about this the jr racers usually bring 2 to 4 spectators Dad to start and tune car, mom, then maybe grandparents and racers friends keep in mind that jrs don't make any $ to race just a throphy so there is your bread and butter for the track but if you make em show up at 8 am and run em round robin to get them out of there which is stupid as most of these kids wanna race with the family and that means big cars/bikes too as some dads do this 1.its hard to make it there by 8 am for most especially friends and grandparents 2.or they don't wanna be rushed out the gate 3.if ran all together then maybe there would be more spectators in the stands and maybe more food/drinks might be sold 10 x $25 =$250 easy money for track oh ya-a $5 throphy still easy money for jr's class and that not including spectators they bring Just my .02

It's tough to buy food at gateway when they close the stand before second round eliminations

I for one quit buying food at Gateway simply because you couldn't rely on any type of schedule with them. I mean if you have an issue and you're busy thrashing away at it and suddenly realize "Wow, I'm hungry" and stroll up there to find the place shuttered up, only takes that to happen once or twice and you start packing something to eat. I mean as far as prices compared to say the Dome or the Ballpark, they aren't that bad. I enjoy the Chicken Strip basket and the Cheeseburgers aren't too terribly bad. As least it's not the old SLIR where the only thing anyone would eat were Hot Dogs because everyone knew someone that got sick eating anything else they cooked.

Agree Mike the burgers and fries are good and not overly priced. They just close too early
