Sat was the Outlanders poker run. The Outlanders are a group of riders that do not allow any drugs or alcohol at any of their events. So this run was an ice cream run. It made it a good one for my stepson's first poker run.
The weather was perfect but my bike wasn't. My wife and I took the roof and doors off the Wrangler and took it. Nathan rode his 2002 Honda Shadow VLX. It's his first street bike. We gave him some cash towards it for his graduation present.
Sign up was at Ted's Harley/Honda in Alton. We bought 16 hands for $20. This run is a little different than the rest I've rode. Instead of cards, you draw marbles. There are five different colors but they don't tell you the value until the end. We drew at Ted's the went west out of Alton to Clifford Terrace rd. That took us to the river road and on to Grafton. Our first stop was at Whole Scoop Ice Cream. We drew our 2nd marble. We were getting hungry already so we decided to eat there. Melissa and Nathan had the cheeseburger meal and I had the jalapeno polish sausage meal. The total bill was about $22 for the three of us. The food was really good and the crinkle cut fries are awesome.
After filling our bellies and relaxing for a while watching traffic, we went north out of Grafton and back into Alton the way we cam out. The next stop was a little place called Chill Out. It's on Homer Adams Parkway in front of Kmart. We drew our marbles as soon as we got there. I skipped eating here, if you can believe that, but Melissa and Nathan had ice cream. Chill Out is a self-serve shop. You go to one end and pick a bowl or cone. They have several soft serve dispensers on the wall. You load up on your ice cream then go to the topping bar. It has about any topping you would want sprinkles, sundae toppings, candy and other things. You take it to the counter and the weigh it. It was just over $8 for Nathan and Melissa's bowls.
2 down and 2 to go... The instructions took us south on Rt3 to 143. We drove on 143 to the edge of Edwardsville to the Northside Dairy. The lot was full a little league team and about 15 parents were already in line so we just drew our marbles and headed for the last stop.
We backtracked on 143 to Moreland rd. That took us back to Bethalto. The Dairy Queen was the final stop. Time for this fat guy to get some ice cream, Choco Cherry Bizzard Please . They weren't set up yet so we had a small wait. Everybody pulled their last marbles.
We were looking at our cards trying to figure out how this was going to work. "Look 4 black and 1 red, 4 of a kind". "2 red and 3 green, full house". WRONG. They did a final draw. The first marble was black. That meant the black marks on your sheet were 1 point each. Red was 2. White was 3. Green was 4 and blue was 5.
I need a pen, who has a pen? I can't keep track of 16 cards in my head.
They announced that they has such a good turnout that they were going to give away $151 for the highest card and $151 for the lowest card.
We had a card with 7 points. 4 black and 1 white. They call out "Anybody have a 5?". I look around, Nodody, good. "Anybody have a 6?". Ooohh getting excited....NOBODY raises their hand! It's coming...she's going to ask...."Anybody had 7?". Up goes our hands!!! and several others . Now what to do. Ends up 3 teams have 7. Somebody yells "Split it" but I don't think they heard them. They decide to use tickets to draw the winner. As as expected the guy sitting next to us won. He donated $50 back to the club. Oh well it was fun. The high card was a 22 and Nathan had 19. Close but no winner.
Overall the route was a nice ride. All good roads with nice scenery. It was 63 miles total. Nathan rode 115 miles that day including the distance to and from home.
There are runs almost every weekend. The next one we might be able to attend is Aug 3. It's put on by the Bush Pilots and starts at Ted's again.
