City of Sparks shuts down Street Vibrations sites in the wake of shootings
The city of Sparks, Nev., shut down its portion of Street Vibrations early over the weekend and declared a state of emergency following two shootings that left the president of the San Jose chapter of the Hell’s Angels dead and several others wounded.
That left vendors on the streets of Sparks to pack up and go home just as some of them were starting to show a profit. “In general, not much has changed,” Jay Borowy, supervisor of the J&P Cycles vendor rig, told the Reno Gazette-Journal the morning after the shooting. “People are still out here. It’s an interesting thing to happen, but it seems like everything has moved right on.”
But that afternoon city representatives told the 120 vendors to pack up, and customers were asked to leave. Ron Rynearson was stranded at a table waiting for his motorcycle to finish. “We were waiting for some parts to get put on at Kuryakyn, and now they’re shutting it down,” he told the newspaper. “It looks like they’re going to put their parts on, and we have to sit here with nothing to do.”
Organizer Randy Burke said he tried to move some of the venders to downtown Reno, but city officials there balked because it would have taxed their security plans.
