BMW Motorrad USA has announced that it will add antilock brakes to its standard packages for its 2012 lineup. The decision makes BMW the first in the industry to offer ABS as standard equipment on all of its 2012 models.
The company is no stranger to ABS, having first introduced the feature on one of its models in 1988.
“Plain and simple, being able to stop a motorcycle faster and more predictably helps prevent a rider from becoming a statistic,” said BMW VP Pieter de Waal. “It’s time for all of us in the motorcycle industry to embrace the benefits of ABS. Extensive testing by safety experts, law enforcement authorities and journalists around the world consistently demonstrates that ABS reduces overall crashes and saves lives.” The 2012 BMW K 1600 GT and K 160 GTL (photo above) are the first BMW models to feature ABS as standard.
According to a study performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, motorcycles with with antilock brakes are 37 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than models without. Though other factors are usually involved in motorcycle crashes, improper braking was identified as a major pre-impact factor, either when brakes are applied too gently or heavily, the study says. Antilock brakes help with safety by automatically evaluating brake pressure to avoid brake lock-up
