I don't do it in the Vega, but in my elky i pretty much turn all the way around in the seat and watch the other guy from the time he leaves until the time i stab the brakes and take the win light.
Not very safe according to NHRA standards but i drove that car for 15 years and never had a problem.

No gopher heading here. I can see just fine. I want everything tight and right in case of an accident.

I think it's a bad idea to race an open body car with belts that loose.
Back in '93 I had a brother-in-law killed in a stock car at a dirt track. The car flipped. They said he slid out of his belts and was beat to death in side the car as it rolled. They said the belts were still latched after the accident. People think he was wearing them loose because he had a previous injury that tight belts bothered.

Al was laying down the law. I watched an entire round of 1/8 mile from the base of the tower. Pretty much every car was OK except for 1 dragster who Al had to have them tighten their belts TWICE before staging. Once in the water box and once again after backing up after the burnout. He had loosened them before backing up. Not cool. Car owner/ crew chief gave Al a hard time for pointing this out. Also not cool. The track doesn't want to see anyone get killed under any circumstance.
