Sturgis Mayor Maury LaRue is optimistic that despite the down economy, this year’s August rally could be one of the biggest ever.
LaRue says early reservations at area campgrounds are up and city property rentals are 80 percent full, according to KOTA-TV.
LaRue says the corporate sponsors have also renewed, and Harley-Davidson moving into the thick of the rally from Rapid City should add to the draw. Will the rally set an attendance record?
"Well, I think a possibility is there. It's probably not as likely, but being the 70th, it's going to be a good rally. Now, if you ask me to gaze into my crystal ball on the 75th, I'd say, oh yeah, real good possibility it's going to be a record rally," LaRue says.
