Are there any restrictions on using a blinder to block the top 2 amber lights at gateway or other tracks for bracket racing.
And if not, what approach works best?

Sure there is ,some track use a blind side tree Some even have staggered tree activation, Even flash burst to disturb photo cells and other illegal devices. Tracks do these things to defeat illegal activity they know goes on . Funny that all these items cost tracks money, money that should be used else where. No matter what is used , there very easy ways to get around the defeating devices.

Some racers use their own versions , ie, sunvisor , blockof helmet which could be illegal? Windshield blocking Just to be clear. I believe you are saying that any attempt to intentionally block the line of sight to the tree is probably illlegal in bracket racing and if not illegal, sounds like poor sportsman ship. Is this what you are saying? So if while racing, I see an opponet use his sun visor or piece of cardboard or tape on his/her helment to gain an advantage at the starting line, what should I do??? Or is the track official supposed to be watching for this sort of stuff. What are your thoughts here?

There might be a rule about modifying a shield on a helmet. I think racerone ran into this at Indy years ago. He had a sun visor that he had made and they said it wasn't legal. You can use the factory visor. There was an altered that had blinders on hinges. The driver would flip up one depending on which lane he was using. When he left the line the blinder would flip down.
I've had black vinyl on the windshields of cars that I have raced before. I also had a 4 or 6" strip on the top of the driver's side window to block the afternoon sun at GMP. Nothing was ever said about either.

Bartc sometimes information on here is to stir the pot. Just my honest opinion. Some make it sound like everyone is cheating. Well I've been racing for a long time and if I thought someone was cheating I would let an official know. Not sit back and make general statements on everyone cheats. They don't and to be honest most of the racers will help you to be better because we all want our sport to grow.

When the tree wasn't blinded and I was racing a street car, sometimes you would get in a situation where the dial-ins were close. Let's say within a tenth. It was distracting having both sides of the tree coming down at almost the same time but just a little off. I would hold up my log book to block the other lane to keep the bulbs from distracting me.

Just as Windows being tinted as to not seeing the driver, some things are by safety for you and others on track. No I don't think everyone is cheating, but some are, and do and at every track Thus tracks having certain items at their disposal to keep cheating to min . You can tell officials all you want to about certain cars having devices, but unless you are willing to put up some cash, they won't look,, and if they did , they would not know where or how to look ! Most track officials knows but unwilling to do anything due to loss of a racers or racers even if a racers is just accused of such. Back to the topic,,, Greg Anderson, has a helmet that had been highly modifyed I'm surprised the nuts allowed such but the windshields, cannot be obstructed

Stock, Super Stock and Comp racers use some type of blinder if you will to block off the other side of the tree and some use it block off everything except the bottom bulb on their side of the tree. A lot of Super Class racers have some type of blinder that they use to block out most of the area around the tree so that there is no distractions while focusing on the tree. I saw one at the National event in St. Louis last year that had this thing on his visor that blocked out everything while he had the visor up but once he pulled it down it was unobstructed. If you ever get the chance look at Dave Connolly's helmet, it's taped down to about a third of it's normal width so he only sees the tree.
