This Gateway 2.0! I have many friends in the KC area and have heard multiple complaints from multiple people about the way HPT has been running its programs. Sad thing is with the closure of KCIR, the loss of HPT would be a big blow to local racers. It is soooo hard for track operators to keep their heads above water, particularly the larger venues. If HPT does close, about the nearest facility for KC area racers is MOKan or Ozark. Many cannot afford to travel extensively so here we go again...racers trading their cars for boats and ball tickets. Sad indeed! There is a significant need for a track in west-central Missouri but which venture capitalist in their right mind would provide the necessary moneys?

the future for hpt does not look good imo. have been following it pretty closely in the Topeka journal newspaper. ticket renewals for the may summer nationals was to have begun yesterday the 15th. when I called the nhra office in California this afternoon they told me the start of renewals has been pushed back to the 20th. I asked the gentleman if my money was refundable if there was no event and his reply was I would receive a credit whatever that means. guess I will call back the 20th and see what the story is. right now it is tied up in the courts over the legality of the petition to put the whole question to the voters of Topeka whether or not to issue more bonds to take it over before the bank forecloses.

does this seem like a bad policy by NHRA or am I thinking wrong. got a e-mail from NHRA today that renewal of tickets for the summer nationals at hpt for last years seat holders is now open. I called the NHRA office and asked them if I renew my tickets and the event does not happen is my money refundable and the lady said NO,that the NHRA policy is there will be no refunds of monies if the race is cancelled.

All you have to do is pay for them with a credit card. If the race cancels and they don't give you your money back. Call the credit card company and they will take care of it and refund the charges. Been there done that.

Next important date to watch for is Feb. 26. that is the day the arguments will be made to the appeals judge whether the city of Topeka can issue bonds to purchase the track or if he will allow the matter to go to a vote of the citizens of Topeka for their approval to purchase the track.

rec'd e-mail from NHRA extending the deadline for last years seat holders to purchase their tickets from March 11 to April 1. My guess would be most people are holding off buying to see if their will be a race in May. Right now it is awaiting the ruling from the Kansas Court of Appeals which should come back any day. They will rule if city of Topeka can issue 5 million in star bonds to purchase the track or it has to go to a vote of the people of Topeka.

Kansas court of appeals ruled today in favor of the city of Topeka. if the city counsel votes next Tuesday in favor of issuing the 5 million in bonds the city of Topeka will own Heartland Park and then find an operator to run it unless or until they find a buyer. As a side note it slipped out that in the contract signed between the NHRA and the City the NHRA is guaranteed a profit of 1.8 million dollars from the May Summer Nationals race! Any shortfall in the 1.8 million dollars has to be made up out of the pockets of the city of Topeka and the operator!

I do not see the city of Topeka running let alone owning a drag strip facility If the purchase it it will be because of the land

I do not see the city of Topeka running let alone owning a drag strip facility If the purchase it it will be because of the land Better get your glasses fixed Dennis. The city of Topeka realizes what an impact the track has on the economy in the community and have already been in contact with several people that would more or less be track operators/managers. They are requiring that who ever runs it invest 7 million dollars into improvements of the facility. As far as real estate value I'm sure that there may be some value to the place but with Forbes Airfield sitting literally next door I can't see any type of residential value to the property, commercial maybe. Topeka gains approximately 6-8 million annually in revenue generated by spectators and racers alike when they hold the races there. Granted the city isn't seeing all of that money but they do see a good chunk of tax revenue from it as well as tax revenue from ticket sales to those events. I'm just glad that one of the nicer facilities in the Midwest didn't get shuttered up. Racing in the KC area has been beat up pretty bad here lately with the loss of KCIR and if Topeka would have shut down it would have been a shame.
